mchales is a pretty sweet looking bar. we didn’t go in, but i had to stop and record it. places like this are disappearing everyday...esspecially in bigger cities where the land and the spaces are so expensive that the old shit gets turned over just at that point where it’s really starting to get cool again. new york seems to have quite a bit of this cool old stuff still around, much better than chicago where it seemed almost everything old was being destroyed. imagine the stories this bar could tell.
Old Bar Signs Kick Ass.
and another place we didn’t get to stop into. bummer, but we didn’t have much time and we had a lot of ground to cover and we had the chicks with us so places like mchales and smith’s bar didn’t make the cut...but they sure look cool.
Another Cool Sign.
the streets of new york always amaze me with the shear volume of people packed onto them. it’s like a fast moving river and it never feels like you’re going upstream, no matter the direction i feel like i’m going the wrong way. we got a few minutes to just stop and stare as the chicks were in some store shopping. the fanelli cafe is supposed to be some famous old place. didn’t get to check it out, but i dig their sign.
Crazy Streets.
Saw a lot of old school shops in new york. like a lot of things the old and the new seem to battle it out with the old hanging on for dear life as all the trendy shit starts taking over.the barbershops have seemed to hang on longer than most old stuff i saw walking around.
Another Barbershop.
looking for a lot of fabric? and i’m not talking a pile of fabric, if that’s all you want go somewhere else. if you want a mountain of fabric you’ve come to the right place. i love this kind of shit. i imagine there are hundreds of places like this in new york that are sort of odd, but they stand for something. and i bet they’re damn good at what they do too.
The Name Says It All.
never went it. don’t have to. the name says it all. this is like the mountain of fabric store...just so random and weird. i’d like to see the dude that sits behind the counter all day long...i bet he’s a trip. is it just me?...but that sure seems like a lot of security gate to protect a bunch of umbrellas and canes. strange.
My Favorite NY Store.
i wish i lived somewhere that had subways. they are badass. we only hoped on the subway once which is too bad. it’s always kind of a pain to figure out where to go and worry if you’ll end up somewhere else, but the ride and looking at people is always worth the trouble, and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than a cab.
Subways Are Cool As Hell.
I’ve always wanted to draw this building or photograph this building in a way that was cool. i think years ago i burned plenty of 667 polaroid film on the damn thing trying to get a decent image and i don’t think i ever got it. so finally, here it is. we took a morning stroll through central park and the weather was perfect. central park is the one piece of sanity in that city where i think because of that i could maybe live there.
Central Park.
is it just me or is there something really creepy about walking through those gates? if i was a kid that would have scared the crap out of me.
Children’s Zoo.
